EU extends 90-day rule for certain non-EU remote workers

The European Union is planning to extend the 90/180 visa-free window for remote workers from outside the bloc, easing stays for digital nomads.

The EU has announced plans to extend the 90-day rule for certain non-EU remote workers, a significant shift for digital nomads and location-independent professionals. Under the current Schengen rules, non-EU citizens can stay visa-free for 90 days in any 180-day period. The proposed extension would allow eligible remote workers—those earning income from outside the EU—to stay longer without triggering visa requirements.

This matters if you're a US, Canadian, or other non-EU citizen working remotely for a company based outside Europe. The extension would let you base yourself in a Schengen country for extended periods without the constant reset-your-clock pressure of the 90/180 rule. Implementation details are still being finalized, but the direction is clear: the EU recognizes that remote workers contribute to local economies and shouldn't be treated as tourists.

Watch for official guidance from your country's immigration authority once the rule is finalized. You'll likely need proof of remote employment and income to qualify. Until then, the 90/180 rule still applies—track your days carefully.
