EU May Extend 90-Day Rule for Remote Workers

The EU is considering letting non-EU remote workers stay longer than the standard 90-day visa-free window.

The European Union is exploring a plan to extend the 90-day visa-free rule for certain non-EU remote workers and digital nomads. Under current Schengen rules, non-EU citizens can stay 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. The proposed extension would give remote workers more flexibility to stay and work legally in the EU.

If you're a digital nomad or remote worker from outside the EU, this could mean longer stays without needing a digital nomad visa. However, the proposal is still in discussion—it hasn't been adopted yet. In the meantime, many EU countries already offer dedicated digital nomad visas (Portugal, Spain, Greece, and others), which provide legal work authorization and longer stays.
