UK ETA Enforcement Begins: Get Permission Before Travel

The UK is now enforcing its Electronic Travel Authorization scheme—visitors without an ETA cannot board flights or ferries to the UK.

The UK has begun enforcing its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement. If you're a visa-exempt national planning to visit the UK, you must obtain an ETA before travel. Without it, you will be denied boarding on flights and ferries.

The ETA is a digital permission separate from a visa. It applies to citizens of visa-exempt countries (including the US, Canada, Australia, and EU nationals) and costs a small fee. The process is online and takes minutes, but it must be completed before you travel.

No ETA, no boarding: the UK is now strictly enforcing digital travel permission.

If you're planning a UK visit, apply for your ETA now through the official UK government website. Check your passport expiry—your ETA is linked to your passport and becomes invalid if you renew it. Travelers without an ETA will be turned away at the border.
